The Durham Dales Federation is a federation of small rural primary schools, which was formed in September 2023. Staff from all schools work together to share expertise and to plan and deliver the curriculum. Our subject leaders co-ordinate their subjects across all the schools within our federation, which ensures that we can offer the same high-quality experiences to all pupils in our schools.
The Upper Dales schools of Wearhead and St John’s Chapel work together on a regular basis each week. At the start of the week, each school works in their own building and on Thursdays and Fridays, the schools come together on the St John’s Chapel Primary School site. On Federation days, we take advantage of the opportunities to work in larger groups with other children of the same age, and we often arrange visits and visitors for these days so that everyone can participate.

View this PostHamsterley Primary School This afternoon, our wonderful Science Ambassadors from Year 5/6 and Dr Lorraine worked with the other children to show them some of their favourite experiments from the training day yesterday. Class 1 observed the changes in Skittles when they are dropped into water, made origami fortune tellers and then made rockets. The Science Ambassadors were extremely helpful with the younger children and we were very impressed with how confidently they explained the tasks. Class 2 used felt tips and coffee filters to make pen chromatography and then also did the origami and rockets. Class 2 enjoyed watching the different dyes in each pen separate during the chromatography experiment! Well done to all of the Science Ambassadors, you all did an excellent job leading and explaining activities. You should be very proud! #ScienceAmbassadors #BritishScienceWeek2025

View this PostHamsterley Class 1 Forest School As it's British Science week, class one were completing a science experiment during forest school. Miss Mawson had a selection of fir cones and the children had to predict what would happen to them once they were put in water. The children all had a good 'guess' as to what would happen. Throughout the session the children came back to check on the fir cones and were all amazed at the results. They were impressed that the fir cones had closed up. Miss Mawson then explained that this happened in order to protect the seeds in bad weather. We also hung some fir cones up to see what happens to them and went on a mini beast hunt and found lots of worms. Nature is amazing!
